Features

The CS-ComfortLab – Customised Chair conformer System is designed to provide an accurate representation of a seat’s mechanical and ergonomic behaviour under realistic conditions of use.

In particular, the machine enables:

  • The simulation of different seat geometries, through precise adjustment of the seat, backrest and armrests
  • Independent or grouped control of the seat base cylinder
  • The simultaneous measurement of the contact and shear forces exerted between the seat and the user
  • Fine-tuning of the lumbar, back and head supports, to create different ergonomic configurations
  • Reproducing and recording configurations, for comparative and repeatable analyses
  • Suitable for a wide range of body types, including users weighing up to 120 kg

These features make the conformator a go-to tool for the objective analysis of comfort, right from the design stages.

Technology

This specialised machine combines several technologies developed and integrated by LF Technologies, as part of a comprehensive approach to advanced mechatronics:

  • Instrumented matrix comprising 52 cylinders, each fitted with:
    • a measurement of contact force
    • a shear force measurement
  • Multi-axis mechatronic architecture, enabling:

    • 3D adjustment of the seat
    • backrest angle
    • 2D displacement of the floor
    • overall tilt of the machine
  • Active safety system, with automatic detection of potential interference and immediate cessation of movement
  • LabVIEW software control, developed specifically for this application
  • Dedicated human-machine interfaces, accessible via a PC or tablet connected via Wi-Fi
  • Open, programmable interfaces, enabling the integration of user-specific developments

All of these technologies are integrated into a robust, reliable and scalable machine.

Key features of this machine

The CS-ComfortLab delivers tangible benefits at every stage of product development:

  • Quantifying comfort through reproducible physical measurements
  • Reducing the number of iterative testing phases on prototypes
  • Speeding up the design process for seats
  • Reliable comparison of different architectures and settings
  • Simple and intuitive to use, despite its functional complexity
  • Machine scalability, through the addition of specific interfaces and scenarios
  • Maximum user safety, built in from the design stage

This specialised machine thus becomes a valuable decision-making tool, supporting innovation and ergonomic performance.

Benefits of the CS-ComfortLab –
chair conformer machine

Reliable data to guide the design process

The chair conformer converts user feedback into precise physical measurements (contact and shear forces), providing an objective basis for comparing, validating and optimising seat geometries.

Conditions close to real-world use

Thanks to its wide range of adjustments and its instrumented actuator array, the machine accurately replicates the positions, movements and interactions between the seat and the user, across a wide range of body types.

A machine designed to meet current and future needs

Designed as a custom-built machine, the conformer adapts to the specific objectives of the project and can be upgraded over time with new interfaces, test scenarios or configurations.

Chair conformer

Simulation of multiple seat geometries and precise measurement of the interactions between the seat and the user in a seated position. The aim is to objectively assess comfort in order to support the design of new seats for the aerospace and automotive industries, and to define statistical models of comfort under real-world conditions.
