Car windscreen wiper blades

Most modern windscreen wipers are made from a rubber overmoulded onto a metal blade which, due to its elasticity, ensures even support of the rubber on the window.

 

Test wipers

Objective

Study and realization of a prototype of a complete measuring bench (machine + software) allowing to validate in production the control of the distribution of the forces on all the length of a wiper blade. The control of the blades is used in production, to check the correct setting of the blade manufacturing machines.

 


Problematic issues

The measuring bench forms the technical basis of the test bench to be used in the wiper blade production units of the automotive supplier. It must allow a fast and reliable test of the blade while ensuring great ergonomics for the user because these tests are carried out at high speed.

Solution and result

The stand-alone control machine allows for seated work. The control panel with screen/keyboard/mouse + laptop is integrated on a side table.

A centring system consisting of two forks mounted on adjustment carriages allows the testing machine to be pre-adjusted to the length of the blade to be tested.

In the centre of the blade, underneath, a knob emerges from the support table through a slot, so as to lift the wiper spring blade as it passes.

The force measurement is continuous and is performed by a low-deflection force transducer. The speed of movement and the increment of the measurement can be set.

In the centre of the table, an adjustable load support presses the blade against the reference plane. The load is set by pressing the thumbwheel directly.

The force controlled by the sensor is displayed on the PC screen.

The wiper blade test bench is used as a technical reference in our customer's production facilities.

The integrated customised software allows to :

  • display the current force/position values
  • display force/position curves
  • automatically check the results
  • archive the results
  • store the settings of the measuring bench.
