Textile test piece

The test piece is a sample of the fabric to be characterised. It is representative of the mechanical behaviour of the material to be tested, but its shape is adapted to the test (square or rectangle).

Objective

Apply deformations to a square or rectangular textile test piece.

Problematic issues

To perform 2D tensile and punching tests of material in tension, at variable temperature, with high force amplitude and non-contact 2D strain measurement.

Solution and result

The tensile test rig proposed by our engineers has 4 axes on the same plane, which allow a 2D tensile test to be carried out on the 4 corners of a test piece.

The textile specimen is fixed with clamps located at each end of the axes.

A 5th axis, perpendicular to the tensile plane, allows punching tests to be carried out.

Each tensile axis is equipped with a 2-stage force sensor system (which ensures a very large measurement amplitude). These force transducers are connected to the grippers via air cushion guides (fluid bearing).

The test area, in the centre of the bench, is protected by a removable thermal enclosure, thus limiting the risk of burning. The heating system with regulation is adjustable from -160 to 250°C, which allows various tests to be carried out under temperature.

A camera is used to perform extensometry, i.e. to measure directly by vision the deformation of the specimen in 2D.

This mechanical traction bench is used in the laboratory. It is easy to use thanks to its intuitive software developed by our programming engineers. The measured values are recorded and processed in spreadsheet format. The customer can thus edit statistics and make analyses.
