Cables (also called electrical conductors)

An electrical conductor is a wire that allows current to flow through it. It can be made of various metals (silver, copper, gold, aluminium, etc.).

In this case, our client wants to test the tensile strength of aluminium electrical cables.

Objective

Design and realization of a horizontal traction machine allowing to pull until the break on cables, to measure the force/deflection curve according to configurable cycles and in compliance with the test standards in force.

 


Problematic issues

The electric cable pulling machine performs tests on cables up to 20 m long with a programmable horizontal pulling force of up to 800 kN.

The control PLC, Human Machine Interface (HMI) ensures intuitive control of the test bench, allowing the setting of traction cycles, tensile forces as well as the change of format of the products to be tested.

 

Solution and result

The engineers in the design office developed the test bench with a concept of identical modules assembled end to end ensuring perfect rigidity of the bench as well as ease of assembly and shipment of the test machine to our customer. This concept also makes it possible to resize the length of the bench by adding or removing modules.

The traction is ensured by a hydraulic servo-cylinder up to 800kN, controlled in position, speed and force. The cable under test is fixed between the traction cylinder and a lockable mobile carriage. This trolley can be adapted to the actual length of the cable under test.

The test bench integrates specific and interchangeable clamping jaws allowing the quick change of the cables to be tested.

Each module is equipped with polycarbonate covers ensuring the safety of the operators in case of breakage of the tested samples.

The proposed mechanical test bench is the perfect answer to the problems posed. The software developed by our programmers under Labview allows

  • to set up test routines,
  • visualize the curves of the measurements made
  • edit and view sensor calibrations
  • to edit automatic test reports.
