Door stop

A door stop is an element that prevents the door from colliding with the wall (e.g. in the event of a draught), and cushions the impact at the end of the movement.

Door stop

Objective

Design and build a test fixture that can test the force exerted on a door stop when the door is opened quickly.

Problematic issues

The bench must be able to simulate the slamming of doors of different inertia at different speeds. It must also be able to measure closing forces and friction.

Solution and result

A motorised arm fixed to the work surface simulates the movement of a door, either to test the friction of a door bottom against the floor, or to test the support of the door on a stop or on a seal.

The arm is fitted with removable weights to simulate the weight of a real door.

The machine is controlled by a specific software, developed under LabVIEW. The basic functions of the machine (movement of the arm, the cylinder, etc.) are controlled by the motor drive.

The operation of the machine is very simple and intuitive. The operator sets the test parameters and then controls the machine via 2 buttons/indicators located on the control board. The first button starts and stops the tests, and the second button locks and unlocks the safety cover.

The door stop test bench is designed to test the force exerted on a door stop according to 3 test parameters:

  • Door opening movement
  • Door closing movement
  • Door opening and closing fatigue test (according to a number of configurable cycles)
